Music Ministry

For 33 consecutive years, the annual community gift of Handel's MESSIAH has ushered in the Christmas season at the Key West United Methodist Church. For the past 19 years, the performance has been produced and conducted by KWUMC's director of music, Dean Walters.

Singers from all over the lower and middle Keys show up at 2pm for a three hour rehearsal, break for dinner, and perform at 8pm! Each year the event draws 60-80 performers, and the excellent performance always draws a full house. Accompanied by organ, piano and timpani, this performance is Key West's unofficial start to the Christmas season. The performance always takes place on the first Sunday of Advent, and is free to the public.

The Chancel Choir at Key West United Methodist Church is considered by most to be the premiere church choir in Monroe County. Many of its members have performed professionally; the full, rich sound lends itself to a variety of musical styles - spirituals, gospel, classical, and some more contemporary selections. The choir's director, Dean Walters, has taught music and voice for over 40 years, was on the music faculty of Florida Keys Community College, and is the past director of the college's Keys Chorale, now directed by the church's organist, Jim Cutty.

The Choir's "Section Leaders" sing at the 8:30 am, service and the full choir at 11:00 am service. The Choir also performs for special occasions, including Christmas Eve , Easter, and a special service for Good Friday.

New to the music ministry outreach is the Masterwork Oratorio Chorale. Created by director Dean Walters, the MOC will perform one major oratorio each year from the master composers, such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. Utilizing some of the island's most talented vocalists, the performance will be a joint fundraising event for the church's organ improvement fund, and the church's Relay for Life Team for the American Cancer Society. The MOC's first performance will be on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at 4 pm in the sanctuary.
