A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
"Wear and Tear Means Life"
I was thinking about this the other day, what does not get older?
Something that is dead. Because we live, we get older and becoming
older brings "wear-n-tear". My body reminds me about wear-n-tear as
we age every time I play Duck-Duck-Goose with my son and his friends.
The knees and back are not as agile as before but at least I still
can play.
What a joy it has been for our church to host a Vacation Bible School
this past July. This year's theme was "Crocodile Dock! Where Fearless
Kids Shine God's Light". We sang, played, read the Bible, made arts-n-crafts,
ate snacks and had tons of fun while we learned about God's presence in our
lives. Our Church had around 40 kids, 15 teenagers and over 25 adult
volunteers running all around. Our Sanctuary, Jones Hall and Education
buildings were buzzing with God's children running and laughing. I must
admit, we got the buildings a little dirty, and they took a little more
wear and tear than usual. We also ended up going over our V.B.S budget.
So the question must be asked, is it worth it?
The alternative to me is that we can maintain cleaner buildings, give our
adult volunteers a much needed week off and save some money by not doing VBS.
The Sanctuary, Jones Hall and Education buildings could have stayed cleaner
and nicer looking and everything would have stayed about the same. But would
we be following our mission? Key West United Methodist Church mission says we
are a "People alive in Jesus Christ, growing through dynamic worship, nurturing
programs, and loving service to others".
Brothers and sisters God has given our church and its members so much and we
are a blessed congregation for it. V.B.S was a wonderful week of sharing God's
love. But this type of sharing and loving can not be just one week a year. We
would love to continue our children's programs by providing them a quality Sunday
school and Children's Church, but we are in need of volunteers. Our Church is
contemplating ending our Children's Sunday School hour because of a lack of
volunteers. If you can give one Sunday a month to help share God's love with
some messy, smelly, active and loving children, call me at the church office
and tell me you want to bring some "Life" to our church buildings.
Our buildings, as beautiful as they are, must continue to show life. If not
then we are a dying church. I am reminded of this saying about life;
First I was dying to finish high school and start college. And then I was
dying to finish college and start working. And then I was dying to marry
and have children. And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough
for school so I could return to work. And then I was dying to retire. And
now, I am dying .... And suddenly I realize I forgot to live.

I want to thank all that participated, helped, cleaned, passed the word around
town, gave financial support or simply allowed us to do V.B.S. for bringing life
back to our church!
Living in His Grace!
